"French absurdist Quentin Dupieux, also known as Mr. Oizo in the music sphere, emerging with his mega-single FLAT BEAT circa the millennium, he is a computer wiz adept in sampling an aleatory style of electronic beats and strains. Starting from directing music videos, his sideline diet of filmmaking has a consistent output since NONFILM (2002) with sui generis quirks like RUBBER (2010) and WRONG (2012) DEERSKIN is his eighth feature, debuted in the Directors' Fornight at Cannes, it is by far his most hyped one, not least by the headliners of Jean Dujardin and Adèle Haenel."

. This picture must be a Tv-series! Perfect trailer first of all.
Jean Dujardin is great in the role of narcissistic man who got hit by life. Scenario is so perfect, it's clearly neutral at the beginning. First I was thinking - it's a drama, not comedy.
But then all around started to be so exciting. You can't imagine this mix of clever narcissistic man starting to be a little bit crazy. But it shown you with a serious face, and this makes it even funnier.
Quentin Dupieux made a great picture, very interesting and 70% of time fun to watch.

FRANCE, 77 minutes, 2019 Quentin Dupieuxs latest is a serial-killer film about a jacket that wants to kill all other jackets and its unhinging effect on its owner. What starts out as a banal incident takes a sharp, chilling turn into Crazytown. Dujardin checking out his “killer style” is definitely one of the best movie moments of the year. His performance – coupled with that of Adèle Haenel, equally bonkers – takes an already strange film right around the bend, culminating in a surprising insight about madness. No doubt about it, Dupieux is still one of the most freewheeling filmmakers in France, or anywhere. In collaboration with the Festival du cinéma international en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. a loopy entertaining WTF lark. Variety. deliciously twisted.

Jean Dujardin admires his new jacket in Quentin Dupieuxs Le Daim (Deerskin. When a French movie is described as a “comedy” and has a July release date in Paris, it almost invariably means that (1) its a generic film about a chaotic summer holiday with families/groups of mature male friends/bands of teens behaving disgracefully, and (2) its not remotely funny. Accordingly, I went to see the new comedy Le Daim (Deerskin) in a state of trepidation, relieved to know that even if it was a hellish experience, the torture would only last for one hour and 17 minutes. Le Daim, directed by Quentin Dupieux and starring Jean Dujardin (of The Artist fame) turns out to be something altogether different than the usual mediocre summer fare. It is infinitely stranger, more anguished and funnier, and is – dare I say it? –   a masterpiece. The central character, Georges (Dujardin at the top of his game) arrives on screen with almost no backstory: all we learn about him is that he has left his wife and job and is driving to the Pyrenees. On the way, he stuffs his corduroy jacket down the toilet of a service-station washroom and buys an ill-fitting fringed deerskin jacket for an outrageously high price, then checks into a small-town hotel. The man who sold him the jacket had also given him a free digital camcorder, which allows him to pose as a filmmaker in the town. The new jacket would seem to symbolize Georgess desire to start his life anew, but it immediately takes on a bizarre importance and personality of its own. Georges starts filming it with his camera and even gives the jacket its own voice. We quickly realize that Georges is a man in the grip of a severe mental breakdown, and, even more worryingly, is a psychopath in the making. His one abiding fixation becomes the elimination, at all costs, of every other jacket in the world. With the help of Denise (Adèle Haenel) a bartender whose dream is to become a movie editor, he starts filming members of the local community (who think they are starring in his film) as they throw away their own jackets at his behest. Spoiler alert: skip this paragraph if you prefer not to know certain plot details.   Dupieux manages to portray the townspeople as both utterly ordinary and deeply weird. As Georges accumulates more deerskin items (hat, trousers, gloves) and starts murdering anyone wearing a jacket, the body count increases. Each death seems to remain undiscovered and uninvestigated as he continues his killing spree. Plausibility has no place in this cinema of the absurd. Apart from everything relating to his coat, Georges also films the wild deer in the area. Dupieux is clearly fascinated by the relation between animal and commodity and by the disconnect between material objects and the living creatures from which they are made. The movie is also a meditation upon the filmmaking process: the directors obsessions and the ambitions of those who will do anything to work or act in films. It cannot be a coincidence that Dujardin, who has gained a few extra pounds and a beard for the role, looks disconcertingly like the director himself. After such an extraordinary movie, it is difficult to look at the ordinary world in the same way. When my friend and I left the cinema, the streets and the people of Paris seemed a whole lot more peculiar than they had an hour and 17 minutes earlier.

YouTube. The latest oddball concoction from French iconoclast Quentin Dupieux stars Jean Dujardin as a man who falls in love with his jacket. After making, among others, a movie about a tire with a killer instinct and a film about telepathy between humans and animals — Rubber (2010) and  Wrong  (2012) respectively — why not also tell a story about a guy who falls head-over-heels in love with his fringed suede jacket? Its all in a days work for French oddball musician and occasional director Quentin Dupieux, who opened the Cannes Directors Fortnight this year with his slight but quite amusing  Deerskin (Le Daim. The Artist  star Jean Dujardin plays a clueless wannabe filmmaker wholl go to great lengths to become the sole person on the planet — or at least the mountain village where hes checked into a creepy hotel — to actually wear a coat. And it is Dujardins presence thatll ensure a greater measure of visibility than usual for a Dupieux project. But despite a few good gags and committed performances, the nagging suspicion that this eccentric concept wouldve worked better as a medium-length work or even a short remains. Itll be released in France on June 19. The film, in the washed-out colors familiar from Dupieux previous work, opens with a strange scene that sees three youths line up and, one after the other, dump their jackets into the trunk of a beat-up old Audi while they solemnly proclaim: “I swear to never wear a jacket again for as long as I live. ” This later turns out to be part of a film-within-a-film thats being shot, with a tiny camcorder and zero cinema experience, by Georges (Dujardin) a deadbeat dumped by his wife. Perhaps as a way to deal with his misfortune, he has driven to a small village in the Alps to buy a 9, 000 jacket made of the titular material from an elderly slob (Julie Delpys actor father Albert, in a cameo. Never mind that its kinda small on his burly frame: George feels like, well, nine thousand bucks. As a bonus, the old man gives Georges an old camcorder, which becomes the prop that informs the lie that hes actually in town to make a film (hes supposedly alone because his fancy producers are in Siberia for an elaborate fight scene. This duly impresses the local bartender, Denise (Adele Haenel, from  BPM) an amateur editor and full-time gamine who becomes involved in Georges completely improvised plan to make a mockumentary. The subject is a ruthless man much like him, who will do anything to become the sole person in the world allowed to wear the only jacket left in existence, so his prized new possession can finally truly shine; the coat is a supposed metaphor for the hard shell we all need to shield ourselves from the harsh outside world. Dupieux, who, as usual, also wrote the screenplay and handled camera duties, has lost none of his sense of mischief. There are a few very amusing moments, including a nightly encounter with a woman who incorrectly guesses the type of film Georges is shooting and another scene in which the sad-sack protagonist tries to get his wedding ring off the corpse of a hotel clerk who committed suicide by shooting himself in the face. Denises deadpan explanation of her experience with the scrambled chronology of  Pulp Fiction  is also worth a laugh while  Deerskin s ending is brilliantly futile, which feels entirely fitting for such an absurd story, even if narrative momentum is abruptly cut short. But the actual plot is, of course, wafer-thin and the whole thing would fall apart if it werent for the committed performance from Dujardin. The actor, in a graying beard and with unkempt hair, has played this kind of crazy and opportunistic loser before, most recently in last years  I Feel Good   but also going back all the way to his creation of  Brice de Nice, which turned him into a movie star. Here, too, his Georges feels fully inhabited even though we only get a tiny sliver of backstory. When he starts speaking to his suede jacket on a clothes stand and then impersonates the jackets voice so the two can have a dialogue, it feels just like something a desperate, lonely and self-satisfied man like Georges would do. Denise and all other parts are really supporting players who are witnesses to — and occasionally unwitting participants in — Georges private madness. In terms of its world building, Dupieux and the production and costume designers have made a serious effort to ground things in a more recognizable reality than in most of the directors previous outings. But the filmmakers tendency to only use violence for laughs and ignore its real-life consequences undermines this attempt to inject some gravitas into  Deerskin s otherwise lovingly detailed backdrop. Somewhat oddly, the musician and director didn't provide a score himself this time around, instead fully relying on pre-existing music. I was expecting an absurd comedy. This was not a comedy, although I did laugh twice. A middle aged man pays a fortune for a 60s deerskin jacket. Then, broke, he meets a waitress who is a wannabe film editor. Then. erm. steals other jackets from kids, posing as a film director using an obsolete camcorder. Then at 39 into the barely 73 minutes film's length I stopped watching.

The way back full movie. Image caption There is evidence that someone really did make the remarkable trek A few years ago, Australian director Peter Weir couldn't get something out of his mind. It was a story dating back more than 60 years. A simple story of a group of men among stark deserts and terrifying peaks, testing the limits of human existence. The director, celebrated for contemporary classics such as The Truman Show, was hooked. "As a feat of endurance and courage and the tenacity of human beings to survive, I thought it was superb. And it stayed with me. he said. "The usual way of testing a story is, does it stay with you enough to want to pursue it as a film. And this was the case. The story was The Long Walk, a gripping account of a Polish officer's imprisonment in the Soviet gulag in 1940, his escape and then a trek of 4, 000 miles (6, 437km) from Siberia to India, surviving unimaginable hardships along the way. Mr Weir decided it had to be his next film. "But I just had one small throwaway question and I didn't expect the answer I got. he says. "It is true? As it says on the cover, right. he asked. "And there was a silence and the producer said: Well, there's a controversy. No evidence That controversy has persisted ever since the book on the subject first appeared in 1956. Right from the start, no-one could find information to prove or disprove whether the author, Slavomir Rawicz, was telling the truth, as he claimed. There were no documents, no evidence, and all trace of his fellow escapees had vanished. Four years ago, I produced a documentary for BBC Radio 4 on the subject, hoping to track down the evidence to show that Rawicz really had done this incredible feat. That documentary led Peter Weir to us. "I contacted Hugh Levinson, the producer of this programme, having heard the BBC radio programme that actually raised the question of its veracity in a very sharp way and began my own investigation. he said. "And out of that I came to the conclusion that I couldn't be sure that Slavomir Rawicz was himself on this long walk. He was certainly arrested and imprisoned - but did he do the walk. The evidence we found suggested the answer was No. We saw documents that suggested that Rawicz had not told the truth about his past, and that although he had been a prisoner in the gulag, he never escaped. Unknown hero A few weeks after our documentary aired, there was a baroque twist. An anonymous letter arrived, suggesting we contact a man who might be of interest. Director Peter Weir dedicates the film to three unknown survivors It led us to Camborne in Cornwall, to the home of Witold Glinski. He is an elderly Pole, courteous with a wry sense of humour - and an extraordinary story to tell. He was interned in the gulag and, just like Rawicz, he escaped in a snowstorm. Just like Rawicz, he took the same route, surviving the heat of the Gobi Desert and the heights of the Himalayas, with one instinct forcing him on. "I thought: I'm going to get a plane, train as a pilot, and then I get high, fly to Moscow, look for the Kremlin and blast it out of the ground. he said. "That was my ambition, what was driving me. This was the driving force inside me, revenge for what the Germans and Russians did. Glinski said he even shared some companions with Rawicz - such as a young Polish girl who died along the walk, and an enigmatic American known only as Mr Smith. Strange encounter Was it possible that Glinski was the real hero and that Rawicz had stolen his story? Perhaps. We could find no evidence to corroborate Glinski's vivid account of his escape and trek. Yet there might be a clue in what he described as a strange encounter in a street in London in the 1940s. Glinski says two men approached him, one a bedraggled Polish officer, the other a dapper Englishman. "They said, Are you Witold Glinski. I said, Yes, what do you want. He said they wanted to talk to Glinski about writing Polish history and that they were interested in where he came from and how he got to England. "I said, I don't have anything to tell you. Glinski recalled. Later he realised that the Englishman was a journalist called Ronald Downing - the ghost writer of The Long Walk. He suspects that Downing had somehow acquired a transcript of a debriefing interview in which Glinski recounted his story, and that he later conspired with Rawicz to pretend the story was his. And there is more evidence that even if Rawicz didn't do the walk, someone else did. We learned of a British intelligence officer who said he had interviewed a group of haggard men in Calcutta in 1942 - a group of men who had escaped from Siberia and then walked all the way to India. And then from New Zealand came news of a Polish engineer who had apparently acted as an interpreter for this very same interview in Calcutta with the wretched survivors. These stories are second-hand, and far from conclusive proof, but for Mr Weir, they convinced him that there was an essential truth in the story that he wanted to retain. "There was enough for me to say that three men had come out of the Himalayas, and that's how I dedicate my film, to these unknown survivors. And then I proceed with essentially a fictional film. This is why the film - to be released later this month - has a new title, The Way Back, and why the central character is not called Slavomir Rawicz. Yet it retains its power as a tale of courage and endurance. "It's about the struggle that all of us have to survive every day. Mr Weir says. "This is on an epic scale, but survival is at the heart of it, and what keeps you going with all the difficulties and pain of life and the bad luck. The Long Walk will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at 13. 30 on Sunday 5 December. The Way Back opens in the UK on 26 December 2010.

January 2019 selection of the NYRB Classics Book Club Salka Viertels autobiography tells of a brilliant, creative, and well-connected womans pilgrimage through the darkest years of the twentieth century, a journey that would take her from a remote province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Hollywood. The Kindness of Strangers is, to quote the New Yorker writer S. N. Behrman, “a very rich book. It provides a panorama of the dissolving civilizations of the twentieth century. In all of them the author lived at the apex of their culture and artistic aristocracies. Her an entrancing idyll. In Berlin, in Prague, in Vienna, there appears Karl Kraus, Kafka, Rilke, Robert Musil, Schoenberg, Einstein, Alban Berg. There is the suffering and disruption of the First World War and the suffering and agony after it, which is described with such intimacy and vividness that you endure these terrible years with the author. Then comes the migration to Hollywood, where Salkas house on Mabery Road becomes a kind of Pantheon for the gathered artists, musicians, and writers. It seems to me that no one has ever described Hollywood and the life of writers there with such verve. ” Praise Thank goodness Greta Garbo encouraged her confidante Salka Viertel to write. With cameos by Kafka, Sarah Bernhardt, Eisenstein, Isherwood, and many others, Viertels memoir is humane, lightly ironic, and dizzyingly entertaining. Its a portrait of two lost worlds—the pre-Hitler German-speaking stage and the pre-CGI Hollywood—as well as the story of an actress and screenwriter who all her life was bold in love and passionate for the arts. —Caleb Crain Salka ends her book with a phrase about her ‘incorrigible heart. It is this quality which sustains and ennobles all the artistic, intellectual, social and political events which her book narrates. It gives us a sense of what it is to be a true person. Without that core of warm humanity all the rest would be vanity. —Harold Clurman, The Nation From early childhood in the Polish Ukrainian sector of Austria-Hungary through her experiences in the German theater and Hollywood, Mrs. Viertel shares a full life, candidly and rewardingly. — Kirkus Reviews Salka is forgotten today. Biographies have been written about her ‘genius husband Berthold, but Salka appears only as footnote in works about Greta Garbo. She deserves better, and her extraordinary story should to be read today by anyone interested in the German exile experience. — Dialog International.

Tired of marvel spectacle, cheesy, unnecessary dialogue and rubbery special effects that don't even look like the characters are actuality in the scene they're in. Also, tired of the over the top fake action, it's time to go back to actors who do real acting and stunt work and make memorable films with poignant themes and messages to ponder during and after the movie. Complete, emotional and gripping tales. Time for movies we can reflect on after watching, with real good acting and powerful music scores. Time for marvel to go away and let film making be a storytelling art again. This movie looks refreshing! I appreciate the serious yet heartwarming tone and I think the music is a little too perky and all over the place but it's nice that it's not so melodramatic like lots of movies today that tell you when to feel certain emotions. Bye, forgettable flicks, time for the artful ways of telling a story that we can experience and appreciate to flourish again. This looks important and great.

This looks like Chinese drama more than the production from Disney lol. Family lawyer cranston ri. Matt Zoller Seitz December 6, 2019 The night comes alive in "Midnight Family, Luke Lorentzen's film about a private ambulance service in Mexico City. This is one of the great contemporary films about the look and feel of a big city after dark, luxuriating in the vastness of almost-empty avenues lit by buzzing streetlamps. It's a real-life answer to fiction movies like " Taxi Driver. Bringing Out the Dead, " Collateral. Nightcrawler " and " The Sweet Smell of Success. "  And yet, despite the film's careful attention to images and sounds—which is somewhat unusual in nonfiction, a mode that too often relies on verbal summaries, infographics, and talking heads—Lorentzen never allows "Midnight Family" to become an empty stylistic exercise. He stays tightly focused on his main characters, the Ochoa family, as they scramble to survive in a brutal, unregulated economy. Advertisement The Ochoas live and work in a city with nine million people but only 45 government-operated ambulances. Their ambulance is nominally run by a father, Fer, who has health problems and seems profoundly depressed (some of the film's most haunting images are silent closeups of his face lost in thought. But the real boss is Fer's 17-year old son Juan, who usually takes the lead in treating patients, dealing with finances and official regulations, and arguing with cops who hassle them in hopes of shaking loose a bribe. Juan also acts as an adjunct father to his little brother Josué, who gets frustrated at their hard existence (there's an argument over how many cans of tuna they can afford to buy) but would rather be on the job with his family than attend school.  It's a rough life. The Ochoas seem to live in the ambulance more so than in their small, cluttered apartment. A lot of the Ochoas' patients can't or won't pay them for their labor. They must compete with other ambulance services to get to a scene first, even street-racing a rival in a sequence that's reminiscent of the moment in " Gangs of New York " where the crews of two private fire trucks brawl in front of a burning house. Every month is a financial crap shoot.  The filmmaker, who shot and edited the movie in addition to directing and producing it, seems to have taken his cues from an earlier era of documentary cinema, represented by directors like the Maysles Brothers ( Salesman, " Gimme Shelter. and D. A. Pennebaker. Don't Look Back. The movie captures moments of astonishing intimacy, not just with the Ochoas but with their patients, the police, and the citizens they interact with from moment to moment. The camera looks at people and places and lets us think and feel things, rather than constantly and clumsily trying to manage our reactions.  There's implicit criticism of government ineptitude and corruption and the viciousness of profit-driven life, particularly when it comes to healthcare, but these concerns emerge organically from the situations the director shows us. The tone is empathetic but clear-eyed, presenting the world's indifference to struggle and suffering as a hard fact, as immutable as the winter draft that chills the interior of the ambulance until Juan asks his dad to shut the doors.  There's no music. The movie doesn't need it. It has traffic sounds, barking dogs, roaring auto engines and squealing tires, and the screams of injured people nearly drowning out the reassurances of paramedics trying to stop the bleeding. The sense of place is nearly overwhelming, and the editing finds little ways to re-emphasize it, such as holding on an empty room or ambulance interior for a beat or two after people have exited the frame. All the world's a stage, we're mere extras upon it, and there's no way to know if anyone's watching the play. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

By turns terrifying and exhilarating, “Midnight Family” unfolds with such velocity that it may take a while for your ethical doubts to catch up to whats happening. When they do, they leave you gasping. " – Manohla Dargis, New York Times Critics Pick “Arguably the most exhilarating documentary to come out of Sundance this year, Midnight Family follows the Ochoa family—the gruff but compassionate Fer and his two underage sons, Juan and Josué—at intensely close range on these Sisyphean missions of mercy. ” – Museum of Modern Art and Film Society of Lincoln Center Included in the “10 Best Movies of Sundance 2019" A deft mix of big-picture doc-making and intimate moments. not to mention a wild—and remarkably eye-opening—ride. ” – David Fear, Rolling Stone “This 81-minute masterpiece will change the way you look at documentaries forever; its style reads like an action movie, its themes like a socio-political drama, and, yet, it still is very much a work of non-fiction, with a camera always exactly positioned to capture a society on the brink of moral collapse. – Jordan Ruimy, The Playlist “Profound and thrilling cinema verite filmmaking. The film is impeccably crafted by Luke Lorentzen… What matters most here is Lorentzens intuition—he knows during many stunning moments just where to put the camera in such close quarters, letting us observe as harrowing drama and cinematic poetry unfolds… 'Midnight Family' is extremely visceral in the best way. ” – Nick Allen, Roger Included in “21 Must-See Movies” at Sundance "An intimate verite documentary. the Ochoas emerge as fascinating embodiments of a country working overtime to correct its shortcomings and keep the lights on. This bracing U. S. competition documentary is poised to provide a personal window into the fast-paced mayhem of Mexico after dark. ” – Eric Kohn, Indiewire.

Keith and joes relationship is actually goals. MOVIES 11:12 AM PST 2/11/2019 by Courtesy of Sundance Film Festival An intriguing perspective on health care in urban Mexico. A family-run ambulance business in Mexico City struggles to stay afloat in Luke Lorentzen's doc. A glimpse into the dysfunction of Mexico's patchwork of public and private health care, Luke Lorentzen's Midnight Family follows a family of EMTs through Mexico City as they struggle to make a living keeping other citizens alive. Though its micro view limits its usefulness in big discussions of public policy — it's easy to imagine American partisans using it as evidence both for and against government-run health care — it is a vivid reminder that all such policies are lived out by millions of individuals, who die every day when things aren't well run. Opening titles explain that in Mexico City, the government runs 45 public ambulances to serve a sprawled-out population of 9 million. That's nearly the entirety of what Lorentzen tells us directly in the film. Everything else we observe or infer during ride-alongs with the Ochoa family, who drive one of an unstated number of private ambulances that fill gaping holes in the city's delivery of health care. This observational approach gives the film its flavor, especially when it comes to family dynamics, but it makes things frustrating for viewers hoping to actually learn something. Lacking outside comment, we can guess but never be sure when the Ochoas are doing the right thing and when they're pushing an ethical line, maybe fatally. (Press notes make some things more explicit, but moviegoers don't get press notes. Whenever they pick up a patient who needs care they can't provide, for instance, they have choices to make: Go to a government-run hospital or a private one? Go to the closest facility or a further one that might be more affordable or better equipped? Leave the crowded-looking free hospital in favor of another down the road? At many junctures, the EMTs inform patients and/or their loved ones of the choices, speaking gently but usually presenting one option as smarter than others. They clearly have more experience than their customers with how the system works. But is their advice sometimes clouded by self-interest? After they've brought patients to a private facility in one scene, we see a staffer there hand over cash to the driver. Is this a shady kickback or part of a somehow legitimate transaction? The former seems likely, but we have no way of knowing for sure. We do, however, get a good sense that the role of police in this ecosystem is morally tainted. Ambulance drivers pay cops bribes in return for tips about accidents; cops hassle drivers, enforcing rules that seem to change arbitrarily. Questions of law and ethics aside, viewers get a visceral understanding here of the cutthroat nature of this private-ambulance business. Though they suffer through long bouts of boredom, the Ochoas leap into action when they hear reports of an accident: We race through the streets with them, often neck-and-neck with other vans trying to make it to the scene first. Whoever's riding shotgun mans the PA, shouting at drivers of other cars to heed the sirens and get out of the way. Juan Ochoa quickly becomes the film's star. Barely 17, he's far more professional than the older man we assume is his father. While slow-moving Dad tries to bum cash off his employee-children — he appears to have emptied his pockets for cops — perfectly groomed Juan hustles. He drives the ambulance, helps patients and reports on the night's frustrations in phone calls to his unseen girlfriend. He also does much of the undesirable job of asking for payment. Though Lorentzen mostly averts his camera's gaze when patients are around, he does listen in on some of the conversations about cost. A high-school girl who's been head-butted by her boyfriend weeps while she bleeds in the back of the van, meekly asking, Is this expensive. And shortly after, Can you please give me a hug to calm me down. Later on, another woman balks at the 3, 800 pesos the Ochoas charge for emergency transport (one of many items on their price list, that's roughly 200 U. S. When patients refuse to pay, that's that; as far as we can see, the EMTs have no recourse. What they do have is a matter-of-fact justification: When no government-provided ambulance arrived at the scene, what was your alternative? I lived on an island The Rock for years and years. I learned that lighthouses are the most beautiful thing when you're returning from sea - they say, you'll be home soon, and you'll be safe. At night the beam of light would sweep overhead, cutting through the fog - and every minute or so the foghorn would sound; I knew then that in maybe 10 hours I'd be back on land, finally. I also found that all lighthouses are very. very haunted; usually by the keepers and their families. Many times I've walked up the metal steps only to hear footsteps behind me, even though I was the only person in the lighthouse. I'd look over the rail to try and figure out what was going on, only to see a translucent 'shadow' of a person looking up at me. Those Wickies took their job very, very seriously - carrying 60lbs of whale oil up 300 steps maybe 3-4x/day just to keep the light lit. Those men were considered angels by mariners...

A lack of official ambulances gives the Ochoa family a chance to operate their own. From the first site of blood inside their vehicle, we are in for a situational horror rich in contrasts: after the gory rescue of a man with a bullet wound, Lorentzen, who served as his own director of photography, cuts to the youngest Ochoa, not yet a teen and tagging along for a ride, blissfully gobbling down chips, his soccer ball by his side. But high-adrenaline jobs can also be addictive. The 17-year-old Juan Ochoa confesses his morbid fascination with gore and muses, “If there were no death, morticians wouldnt eat. ” Unsurprisingly, the films social microcosm is gritty, though it doesnt lack for distractions: On the one hand, relentless competition; on the other, a sense of responsibility and compassion. By slowly revealing how hard and heartless it can be to earn money from misery, Lorentzen includes the Ochoas among those whom the state has failed.
